Key West Roosters descend from roosters bred in Cuba and the Keys for fighting. For many years a winning fight rooster would be a source of income and, of course, bragging rights. Cockfights are no longer legal in the United States; because of this, a lot of chickens were released and left to their own on the Island.
One of the best ways to see the sights in Key West is on a bike. And because the island’s only 4.2 square miles, it’s easy to navigate and biking your way around will allow you to enjoy everything Key West has to offer at your own pace. The island is very bike friendly with low speed limits for cars and numerous racks around town to lock up. Discover all the natural beauty, cool architecture and hip places to hang out as you make your way around the narrow, scenic streets. A great starting point is on Southard Street; there’s a nice path that cuts through the heart of Key West and will take you past the Green Parrot Bar, ending up at the Truman Annex. Biking within the Annex is quiet and since there are not a lot of cars, it’s easy to safely enjoy the sights. Another great route is to bike through Fort Zachary Taylor; if you start on Fort Trail, you’ll enjoy a short (less than a mile) trail that takes you to the southern tip where folks are sunbathing, fishing and snorkeling. You can hop off, tour the fort, then get back on your bike and ride past a pine woodland and along the seawall with gorgeous water views. There are numerous bike trails and paths around the island to enjoy as well.
