Manege/Manezhnaya square near the Kremlin.
Saint George, patron saint of England, of Moscow and of Cáceres in Spain, was an early Christian martyr, who during the Middle Ages became a paragon of valour and selflessness.
Nothing of his life or deeds can be established, but legends about him as a warrior saint became popular, such as the story of his rescuing a Libyan king’s daughter from a dragon and then slaying the monster in return for the king’s subjects promising to be baptized.
Zurab Tseretelli
(1934) is a Soviet/Georgian painter, sculptor and architect known for large scale and at times controversial monuments.
Saint George is the patron saint of Moscow. Two equestrian sculptures of Saint George fighting the dragon, both by Zurab Tsereteli, can be seen there.
Manezhnaya or Manege Square is a large pedestrian open space at the heart of Moscow bound by the Hotel Moskva to the east, the State Historical Museum and the Alexander Garden to the south, the Moscow Manege to the west, and the 18th-century headquarters of the Moscow State University to the north.
The square forms a vital part of downtown Moscow, connecting Red Square (which sprawls behind the Iberian Gateimmediately to the south) with a major traffic artery, Tverskaya Street, which starts here and runs northward in the direction of Saint Petersburg.
