Lucchetti D'Amore
Love Locks
Rome Italy
2016
The gesture was meant to symbolize the couple eternally locking their hearts together. It took off and clusters of padlocks can be found near other landmarks in other Italian cities.
Visitors to Italy may have seen “lucchetti d'amore” (love locks) placed on bridges and lampposts in cities such as Rome, Florence, Bologna, and Turin. The locks, meant to symbolize eternal love, are placed on the bridges by couples, who then toss the key into the water below.
Lungotevere (Italian for Tiber Waterfront) is an alley or boulevard running along the river Tiber within the city of Rome. The building of the Lungoteveres required the demolition of the former edifices along the river banks and the construction of retaining walls called muraglioni (massive walls).
