Palazzo degli Angeli - A Trophy Asset in the Heart of Florence
Palazzo degli Angeli, Angel's Palace, is a true gem. It is a special and beloved acquisition, therefore it is my pleasure to show you this charming asset and its story.
The palace was built during the big project of Risanamento del Mercato Vecchio (Reorganization of the Old Market), that deeply changed the shape of the historical center of Florence. The construction was completed in 1892, by the Architect Giuseppe Boccini, but was subjected to repeated interventions. The distributive plan remained unchanged, with the exception of the roof which was modified in the second half of the 1900s.
The building consists of a rectangular plan with two courtyards and is characterized by an overlooking facade with the main entrance along via Calimala. The other sides lie respectively on Via Porta Rossa, Via de’ Lamberti and Via Arte della Lana. The first three are decorated with the graffiti technique in the above section, whereas the side along via Arte della Lana has a more simple decoration. Windows are characterized by the "Florentine-style" pocket sliding shutters.
Compared to its original characteristics, the interior of the building was subjected to many changes in terms of flooring and ceilings, recently substituted. The roof of the construction, as mentioned above, was drastically remodeled in the second half of the 1900s, resulting in the transformation of a flat surface, where two small portions were erected. As a result, two new housing units substituted the attics.

Palazzo degli Angeli , or the building of the Catholic Insurance Society , is a civil building in the historic center of Florence , located in via Calimala 2, also overlooking via Porta Rossa , via de' Lamberti and via dell'Arte della Lana . The slightly enaphatic name of the building was given by the owners in recent times, after the 2015 renovation, in reference to the putti and little angels that are represented in the external decorative paintings.
Sgraffito (plural: sgraffiti ; sometimes also scraffito ) is a fresco decoration technique which can be either masonry, obtained by applying layers of plaster with contrasting colors on a damp surface, or ceramic , obtained by applying to a raw ceramic object two successive layers of coating in different colors. In both cases, the work is completed by scratching the outer covering, so as to bring the underlying one into view, thus producing the outlines of a design.
